RANZCP Training
Training in psychiatry is done under the guidance from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
based in Melbourne with a college office in Wellington NZ.
It is a competency based framework whereby trainees undertake Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) every 6
months in various training rotations some of which are optional and some are compulsory.
Training is both academic and practical and registrars have protected 1-1 supervision each week for an hour from
their nominated supervisor. This is in addition to working alongside their supervisor on a regular basis and getting
support for college examinations. Completion of all EPAs must be done on InTrain.

Stage 2 training comprises 2 years in specialist rotations including the 2 mandatory rotations of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry. Other rotations available in this stage include Psychiatry of Older Adults, Drug and Alcohol Psychiatry (Hamilton and Bay of Plenty only), Forensic Psychiatry (Hamilton Only), Eating Disorders Psychistry (Hamilton only)
The MCQ must be completed before the end of stage 2 as it is a pre-requisite for entering certificate training in stage 3. Some certificates also require another college assessment be completed in order to enter training so please think about this early.
This is the stage for specialist training in certificate programmes if you choose. Stage 3 lasts for 2 years and all college examinations ( MCQ, Written examinations, Scholarly Project, CCA and Psychotherapy written case) must be completed before fellowship and any certificates are awarded.
